Put off Put On Dynamic

put off put on dynamicWhat is the Put off put on dynamic of biblical change?

At the heart of biblical counseling is the put off put on dynamic.  We see this process outlined in Ephesians 4:22-24

put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

First there is something, some behavior or habit that needs to be put off. This is what needs to change. We must first describe this in the way the Bible does. It is not an affair, it is adultery. This is the beginning of the put off put on dynamic.

Then we must be renewed in the spirit of our minds by understanding this habit biblically. The spirit of our minds is what some people call the inner self. This includes our motives, desires, attitudes and thoughts. It is this inner being that influences everything that we do externally; our behavior, actions, reactions, words and choices. It is at the core of the put off put on dynamic.

Next and most important we must put on the new habit. This can only be done through practicing. If we stop doing something there is a void left in its place. If this void is not filled with the Godly alternative then another habit or behavior that may be even more destructive to us may take its place.

If we simply stop some behavior by sheer will power and don’t start some new behavior the old behavior will return.

It’s like the unclean spirit that has gone out of a person in Luke 11:24-26. It wanders around looking for a home and returns home to find it swept out and goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself and makes its home again.

You must replace your old ungodly habit with a new godly habit through practicing.

Scripture teaches us that sin begins in the heart and works its way out. Lasting change works the same way. It begins in our hearts as we conform to God’s standards in our hearts using the put off put on dynamic and then this works its way out to our actions, words and habits
